The interactions between social and community factors and health status are extraordinarily complex (Figure 4.1), especially for older adults. It is important for the healthcare professional to be aware of the impact these factors have on the health and well‐being of the older person. This chapter will provide a brief overview of the demography of ageing and then focus on how societal structures and constructs influence older adults' experiences. Challenges of ageing will be examined at a societal level, with a discussion of how providers, healthcare systems, and governments can address these challenges to optimize older adults' well‐being.
