I still remember the sad look on my mother’s face when she told me this story. She was invited as a homestay guest by Dr. Hessel H. Flitter, a dean of the Nursing School at the University of Hawaii and Dr. Harold R. Rowe, who were retired from Penn as professors. One day, all of a sudden, Hessel asked my mother, “What was the name of the person who was a friend of Hitler?” She could not think of anyone, so she thought and thought. Then, Hessel said to her “Now, I remember, ‘Hirohito.’ ” Naturally, she denied Hessel Flitter’s remark and said, “The Emperor Showa, Hirohtio, was not a friend of Hitler’s. He had never met Hitler even once.”

Harold and Hessel supported JAS, Japan-America Society, for a long time, so my mother thought they knew everything about Japan. They helped a lot of Japanese students who were in America, because Harold felt responsible for the atomic bombs dropped in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. Harold’s family belonged to Amish, so he was anti-war. However, his father became very sick, and so to help his father, he became a doctor for the U.S. Army. According to Harold, he was told if he had not served in the Army, his father would not have been treated in the hospital. The atomic bombs were dropped while he was serving in the Army, so he seemed to believe that he was responsible for the disaster caused by the atomic bombs.

Therefore, Harold actively helped Japanese students. Harold was Hessel’s step brother and Hessel became interested in what Harold was doing, so he also helped Japanese students. Interesting fact was Harold respected the Emperor Showa, Hirohito, a lot, because Harold was a micro-biologist and the Emperor Showa, Hirohito, was also a biologist. Harold used to say, “The Emperor Showa is an excellent specialist in his field and a rare person compared with other kings in Europe.” Harold had an exceptional respect toward the Emperor Showa, Hirohito, and gave him the highest esteem. He actually had the Emperor Showa’s publication. Hessel’s point of view would be typical among Americans about the Emperor Showa, Hirohito. Both Harold and Hessel were outstandingly intelligent, so my mother was shocked to hear Hessel’s remark about The Emperor Showa, Hirohito.

The above story that my mother told me interested me about the Emperor Showa, Hirohito, and then I came to know he was the highest Shinto priest. Since then, I have been studying Shinto and the Imperial system of Japan or Tenno System in Japanese term. I learned there are many Shinto sects now and these phenomena already started toward the end of the Tokugawa Regime during Edo Period. There were at least 13 sects during the era, early 19th century. However, Shinto had already been influenced by Buddhism at the earliest stage of Japanese history (around 600).

The biggest discovery I made about Shinto is that Tenno has been the highest Shinto priests and has played an important role in Japanese political history. Among the great Tenno, The Empress Jitoh (Jitoh Tenno) played the most important role in defining what The Emperor (Tenno) should be. Without her feat, no one would understand what The Emperor Showa, Hirohito (Showa Tenno), did and why he did his best for the suffering Japanese people, almost all of whom were going to starve to death during and after the Pacific War.

With the help of the Supreme Commander Douglas MacArthur, The Emperor Showa (Showa Tenno) led Japan to a peaceful recovery. Without them, Japan could have become involved in endless battles like Afghanistan, because there was a lot of possibility which would have resulted in complete disaster in the postwar situation in Japan. Two supreme gentlemen, the Supreme Commander Douglas MacArthur and Showa Tenno were the greatest key contributors to overcome the tragic disaster that the Japanese people in those days were facing.

One thing I would like to add here is the big roles the United States played to end the WWI and WWII. Without the determination of the United States, those wars would not have come to an end. Now, the United States, Western Europe, Australia, part of Asian countries and part of African countries have been experiencing radical Islamic terrolism. The radical terrorists are as evil as infamous Nazis Hitler’s Protection Squadron and the Japanese Empire Military Regime. Both Nazis and the Japanese Empire Regime killed a great number of dissidents including journalists. I firmly believe the United States will play a main role in resolving these horrible issues going on at the moment.

Sad facts are that the Japanese radicals during the 60s carried out an anti-U.S. campaign owing to the Vietnam War and tried to communize Japan. They tried to militarize themselves and to attack the United States bases and Japanese government office buildings during the early 70s, only to fail. Some of them escaped to the Middle East and taught Islamic extremists how to conduct suicide attacks. Suicide attacks are nothing but the copy of Kami-Kaze suicide attacks. The freelance journalist, who is said to have been beheaded by ISIS, was a person whose mother was a member of such radical groups. She seemed to believe firmly that her son would not be beheaded by ISIS at that time, because her son was a friend of ISIS. She expressed so many controversial comments at her press conference, so most of the TV stations stopped broadcasting the press conference. However, NHK kept on recording her press conferences.

Furthermore, NHK edited the press conference and changed it into a dramatically sad mother’s story. All the other Japanese TV stations exposed her radical remarks as a post terrorist and most of the Japanese people got furious at the fact. And, they started to say, “It does not matter whether her son will be beheaded or not.” In spite of these facts, most international media ignored Japanese people’s true opinions and misinterpreted her and her son and totally made up stories of the freelance journalists by changing the subtitles of the press conferences when they broadcast the news. Some Japanese people believe that the journalist is still alive. Anyway, most Japanese people were furious at her and some of them threw stones at her house and yelled at her to get out of Japan after her controversial press conferences. All radical Japanese terrorists’ remarks and activities including hers should be monitored by the government.

Seeing EU nations accepting numerous refugees, I acutely feel that we need peaceful world without conflicts. At the very bottom line, the current conflicts are not related to accepting refugees unconditionally without background screening. ISIS members sneak into EU nations, the United States and a lot of other countries as refugees or immigrants and commit radical terrorist attacks. These nations are experiencing difficult issues of humanity and threat of terrorist attacks by the radical Islamic terrorist groups.

The way Japan could peacefully and astonishingly quickly recover from the disastrous ending of the Pacific War could be a good example to tackle those issues. I sincerely hope that this book will serve as a good tip to live in harmony with other peoples all over the world.

Meiji Jingu Shrine, Yoyogi, Shibuya, Tokyo

On the New Year’s Day…

Meiji Shrine is located in the urban area of Tokyo but the ambiance inside is completely different from the surrounding area. It is a holy place, which is full of nature and fresh air. People inside Japan and from abroad walk all the way from the main gate to the main Shrine. The vast precincts of Meiji Jingu Shrine are filled with thousands of visitors on the New Year’s Day. Meiji Jingu Shrine is a very quiet and peaceful area compared with surrounding urbane area of Tokyo. It is said that approximately three million people come to visit Meiji Jingu Shrine during the first three days of the New Year.

The crest on the gate is the symbol of Royal Family of Japan, “Chrysanthemum.”
