Why Not Ask?
ОглавлениеFebruary 19
Sometimes in life, and particularly more as we get older, we become negative. We too often assume that things aren’t going to work out, so there is no sense in trying. We sometimes forget that we can accomplish great things with God’s help. We do need to ask, however, and we do need to have the right motives when we ask.
The epistle of James sometimes seems a little blunt. James speaks and writes straight from the shoulder. “You do not have,” he states, “because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives” (James 4:2d–3a). Jesus Himself writes: “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened” (Matthew 7:7–8).
There are numerous references in the Psalms about seeking the Lord’s help. Here’s a sampling.
“I sought the LORD and he answered me.”
“This poor man called, and the LORD heard him.”
“Wait for the LORD, and keep his way.”
“Hear my prayer, O LORD; Let my cry for help come to you.”
Indeed, Lord. Hear our prayers today.
