There’s a day after winter

but before spring

when the stream

behind the house runs.

One year it ran in February,

and we didn’t know what to do.

But usually it runs in March,

letting us know

spring wants in

on the composition.

It sings through cascades and ripples, a

choir of rocks and sticks and swirling mud.

Turns out,

winter and spring

together make

beautiful music.
