agamemnon:King of Mycenae, High King of Achaea, the Greek leader
menelaus:King of Sparta, Agamemnon’s brother, husband of Helen
achilles:Prince of Thessaly, leader of Myrmidon army
odysseus:King of Ithaca, the most cunning of the Greeks
patroclus:The dearest friend of Achilles, killed by Hector of Troy
ajax:King of Salamis
palamedes:Greek hero, betrayed and murdered by Odysseus

(Other important Greeks are Idomeneus, King of Crete; Machaon, surgeon to the Greek forces; Nestor, King of Pylus, the oldest leader in the war; Teucer, the half brother of Ajax, a famous archer; Diomedes, King of Argos and second-in-command of the Greeks. But these men do not come into this story.)

TROJANS

(They prayed to Zeus, Apollo, Aphrodite, and Artemis.)

priam:King of Troy, an old man
hecabe:Queen of Troy (called Hecuba by the Romans)
hector:Eldest son of Priam and leader of the Trojans in war
paris:Younger son of Priam; he stole Helen from Sparta and was brother to Hector
cassandra:Daughter of Priam, sister of Hector and Paris; she was a prophetess whom no one believed
aeneas:Cousin of Hector and Paris, second-in-command of the Trojan army; son of old Anchises
helen of troy:Wife of King Menelaus, Queen of Sparta, though she lived for ten years in the city of Troy
