Psalm 32

I acknowledged my sin to you,

and did not conceal my guilt.

Recently I answered the phone, and a familiar voice cried out, “I’ve just heard the news. He’s not guilty.” For some months the case had gone on, dragging through the judicial system. It had hung over many lives, not just the accused.

There were ghastly days when it seemed as if the arguments for the defence would fail. Now there was immense relief and joy. I could hear it in every tremor of the voice on the phone. Two words had changed everything: “not guilty.” Life and freedom had been given back for the living.

“Happy are they whose transgressions are forgiven, and whose sin is put away!” Here is the theme of this psalm. Someone has emerged from bearing a heavy load of guilt, and they are now revelling in their newfound freedom. “Happy are they to whom the Lord imputes no guilt.”
