Orchardson fell in love once only, at the age of forty-two, and then he married his love. All these early “affairs” were mere “leather and prunella,” as he would himself have said, but they evidently occupied a very considerable amount of time and thought—or perhaps fancy; which is my excuse, besides the character, the poetry and humour shown, for dwelling on them.
