Mr and Mrs Sale

ON THE EARLY morning of that chilly April day when Julia, before the altar of St Rita in John’s Lane Chapel, married Fergal, she became Mrs Conroy. But Miss Esdaile, as she had been, although relieved that ‘the horrid little charade’ – as she would always refer to her wedding – was over, was not pleased.

She was pleased enough to be standing beside Fergal and she was even more pleased that he had relieved her of her predicament; but, as she faced out on to the grimy Dublin street and the stench of the River Liffey wafted particularly potent, Julia had the very distinct feeling that she had come down in the world.
