Of the twelve great gods and goddesses that made up the Olympic Council, ten have been already described. These are: Zeus, Hephæstus, Apollo, Hermes, Ares, Hera, Athena, Hestia, Artemis, Aphrodite. The two that remain are Poseidon, god of the sea, and Demeter, the grain-goddess, of whom later chapters will tell. Besides these greater gods there were many lesser deities. Those that had a place in Olympus are described in this chapter.
