THE SECOND PHASE OF THE YOUNG ADULT PERIOD
ОглавлениеDuring the second phase of the young adult period (typically between 23 and 30 years of age), there is often a maturing sense of identity and more “adult-like” roles in society, such as a stable intimate relationship, employment, and financial independence. This phase, when the individual starts making plans about his or her future life, is usually accompanied by a growing recognition of the importance of striving for better glycemic control and a receptiveness to improving self-care behavior. Life partners can be important supports and agents for change, and a shared sense of investment in the future will often catalyze this change in self-care behavior. This period (when lifelong patterns of behavior are set) can be a critical “window of opportunity” for health care and educational interventions. Health care providers and educators have a crucial role at this stage in preparing and motivating the young adult with diabetes to assume self-management responsibilities.
