The book examined the pre-revolutionary and post-revolutionary Russian legislation, legislation of a number of foreign countries, including the former socialist space. We consider the penalties that could be imposed for crimes committed at different stages of development of the Russian state, as well as existing abroad. We study the formation of the penal system in its modern sense, there is a tendency of designing the system of criminal sanctions in the history of Russian and foreign criminal legislation. The author makes specific recommendations regarding the possible use of the historical and international experience in the further improvement of the Russian system of criminal penalties.

The book will be of interest to students, postgraduates, teachers of law faculties, researchers, as well as for all those interested in criminal law.
