Chapter Six: The sins of the past

Kaarl saw the twins waving from underneath a tree in the quad. He made his way across the grass to join them, dodging Frisbees and the plethora of other sports implements that were being hurled about. As he passed an orange Angel strumming on a guitar and serenading a small group of girls he wondered why the scene around him was so similar to a campus in the Mortal world. Had Paradise’s Hall of Knowledge unconsciously come to emulate similar places on Earth or was it just the natural state of being for tertiary students regardless of realm?

‘How is your day going?’ Kaarl asked as he took a seat beside the sisters.

‘I’ve had it up to here with sensitivity training,’ replied Verin. ‘I know where to touch a man if he’s been good and where to kick him if he mouths off. It’s the same place by the way. What else do I need to know about sensitivity?’

‘It’s pretty dull,’ said Vetis, ‘and repetitive.’

‘Well, we have Mortal History up next,’ said Kaarl ‘You can’t say that is repetitive. Learning about history from the people that were actually there is a real eye-opener.’

‘Depends who it is,’ replied Verin ‘That Gandhi guy was boring. Doing nothing isn’t a form of protest, unless you believe every unemployed person on the planet is taking a stand against the British Empire. He was just really lazy when you think about it.’

‘So, basically you are learning nothing in sensitivity training?’

‘I know what to say when I’m in class,’ Verin replied with a smile. ‘I can be myself around you guys though, they won’t change me.’

As Kaarl was about to point out that change was, in part, the point of an education Sasha and a group of her friends walked past the trio. The silver Angel gave the twins a filthy look before turning her attention to Kaarl.

‘Hi, Kaarl.’

The twins repeated the greeting in their most nasally, simpering voices. Sasha stuck out her tongue and Verin gave her the finger in reply.

‘She just did that to annoy us,’ said Vetis as the girls walked off. ‘Don’t worry; she doesn’t actually think you’re hot.’

‘Thanks.’

‘I didn’t mean it like that. I only meant she has no interest in you whatsoever other than as a tool of petty girlish revenge.’

‘Got it.’

Verin stopped looking for a rock to throw at the back of Sasha’s head and turned to Kaarl.

‘Don’t tell me you actually want her to like you?’

‘No it wasn’t that, it was the suggestion that…never mind. She is rather attractive but I don’t think she is my type. If I have a type that is.’

Verin’s eyes narrowed.

‘That is the first time I have heard you talk about any girl like that. She is our nemesis, Kaarl. I’m also pretty certain she has herpes.’

‘There is no disease in Paradise,’ replied Kaarl.

‘Well, if there was she’d be patient zero. She is just filthy, everybody says so.’

‘You forget all about liking Sasha,’ said Vetis, patting Kaarl on the shoulder. ‘We’ll find you something better, something that isn’t mean and riddled with herpes.’

‘I don’t like Sasha –’

‘That’s the spirit.’

The bell saved Kaarl from any more of the mildly disturbing conversation. The trio gathered up their belongings and made their way to class.
