ОглавлениеINTRODUCTIONS
Jim Glass’s new collection of short stories is a welcome addition to the list of novels he has written thus far, and the title, Imaginings of a Dark Mind, gives you an accurate preview of what is to come. From the opening short poem, “Strings,” to the final story, “Beware the Quantum Bunny,” Glass’s tour-de-psyche covers a wide swath of fascinating speculative fiction.
There are bright spots and upbeat endings, but there are also dark threads that ensnare the reader, and the range includes everything from an AI version of a séance, to mysterious fatal illnesses, to aliens way more sentient than expected. Glass has a great handle on the science, and a deft touch with his characters. He tends to grab you with the first line and not let go until the last line, and it’s an interesting ride all the way.
I do believe Glass has a winner here.

It’s a rare writer who is equally at home in hard science fiction and occult horror. Add a probing interest in what humans (and others) can do to, with, and for each other, and you have James Glass.

Imaginings of a Dark Mind is a baker’s dozen of short stories, plus three others I wasn’t able to classify, all by much-published science fiction author and professor of physics and astronomy, Dr. James C. Glass. They range from stories rooted in theoretical physics to stories bordering on the spiritual. What they have in common is a sweeping view of reality, an innate humanity, an incisive perceptiveness, and Dr. Glass’s distinctive story-telling voice.
I myself believe the collection is misnamed. I would call it Having Heart in the Real World—something like that. Which may explain why I wasn’t invited to the naming discussion.
This is good stuff. I commend it to you.
