Do you have a Bachelor’s degree? You can teach online in some cases with a Bachelor’s degree, for example, in A.A. programs, certificate programs, and at online high schools.

Many online teachers have a background in traditional classrooms and a master’s degree in some discipline. For post-secondary, you will see many job postings that specify you need at least 18 graduate credits in the discipline.

However, I’ve noticed that you don’t always need 18 graduate credits, especially if a subject is short of teachers. In recent years, there has been a lack of teachers qualified to teach Medical Billing and Coding, so it has been easier to get a position in that subject for teachers with fewer credentials. You are paid more for your higher degrees (and yes, some schools require a Ph.D. or DBA, or want you to work towards one). But there are still many opportunities without one of these ‘terminal’ degrees.

What is your job and life experience beyond your teaching experience? Scholar-practitioners are appreciated and valued in online education - both by program chairs who hire you, and by students. For example, my English Composition students at a technical college appreciate my background in high tech and in technical writing.

If you have a higher degree and expertise to share, it is still possible in some fields today to get an online teaching job even without much teaching experience. I regularly hear of teachers doing this.

Successful online teachers are skilled at facilitating discussions and online learning community formation. They are also good at:

 Time management, organization and responsiveness. You must be very responsive to the posting, emailing, and grading guidelines and deadlines with most schools

 Easily learn different school systems, processes, policies, and technologies

 Written communication

 Rapid typing or skillfull use of dictation software like Dragon Naturally Speaking
