Unique Experiences

Оглавление

It is also important to consider the impact of unique situations and experiences on the development of individual worldview. Growing up in a home in which violence is commonplace, for example, may lead one to feel less safe or less trusting of others. In addition, it may be that particular events—both positive and negative—may impact a change in worldview, though negative events may be slightly more impactful (Gutierrez & Park, 2015). Influences of unique experiences may be moderated, however, by pre-event worldviews. In a study by Gutierrez and Park (2015), college students who had worldviews that included strong senses of self-worth had greater increases in their self-worth following positive individual events, as compared to those who had lower self-worth at the beginning of the study. Thus, personal psychological health may be important in maximizing positive events and potentially also in buffering against negative events (Lopez, Pedrotti, & Snyder, 2019). Think for a moment about different life events that have happened to you specifically as an individual. Some have likely influenced beliefs you have about the world and the way in which you see things. Our own worldviews are woven together by the cultural and unique experiences that fill our lives.

We next turn to a discussion of several models that flesh out some of the influences we’ve described here.
