Acknowledgments

I am honored that Jerry Schad, this guide’s original author, entrusted his book to my care. The dean of Southern California guidebook authors, Professor Schad originated the Afoot & Afield series in 1986 and wrote 16 books in all, mostly about the outdoors. His breadth of knowledge of the region’s trails and natural history was unsurpassed. An accomplished athlete in enviable physical condition, he was diagnosed with kidney cancer in March 2011 and passed away six months later at age 61. I have endeavored to update this edition with recent developments and new trails while honoring his high standards. Learning about our wild places is a journey of a lifetime.

Most of the words in this book were written by Jerry, and the multitude who assisted him are recognized in the third edition.

Many more people have contributed their time and knowledge to this fourth edition. Steve Aleshire, Carroll Baldwin, Debra Clarke, Kelly Elliott, Eric Ey, Rob Hicks, Candice Hubert, Trude Hurd, Ellen Loftin, Vlesydi Loveland, Marisa O’Neil, Barbara Norton, Zachary Salazar, Jim Simkins, Ron Slimm, Jenn Starnes, and Joanne Taylor reviewed materials and provided insights. Volunteer docents of the Irvine Ranch Conservancy guided tours across the historic Irvine Ranch. Joel Robinson of Naturalist for You shared his trove of knowledge and his spectacular photographs.

Students from the Claremont Colleges and colleagues from Broadcom Corporation joined me during the fieldwork. Greg Fong, Aaron Stratton, and Avi Thaker were especially regular. My long-time climbing buddy, Craig Clarence, was excellent canyoneering company. My sons, Benjamin, Samuel, and Abraham, were my most frequent companions, hiking or mountain biking with me for 53 delightful days on the trail. This work would not have been possible without the support of my wife, Jennifer.

I would like to thank the team at Wilderness Press for making this book come together. Molly Merkle envisioned the new edition. Laura Shauger brought her outstanding editing skills to the project. Ritchey Halphen guided the book through production. The remaining errors are my own.
