It was in 2020 the Great Egyptian Museum (GEM) was rushing its movement to inaugurate after several failed attempts, all this due to the pharaonic ambitions to create at the foot of the Great Pyramids in Gizah, the largest National Museum of Archeology in the world, with more than 50 hectares and 120,000 pieces, when originally it was only thought of 50,000.

The layout is astonishing with gigantic galleries, staggering staircases, and the colossus of Pharaoh Ramses II that adorns the main lobby, leave any visitor perplexed.

With its 83 tons of weight and 12 meters of height, it has been towed for 400 meters, in a truck with an iron structure that protected it towards the new museum. With presidential honors, with a military guard, this gigantic statue that until 2006 was in the square of the same name in Cairo was moved to the New Great Museum.

This was the fourth time it had been moved from its place. Known as Ramses the Great, the third pharaoh of Egypt’s XIX Dynasty, who ruled the territory about 3,000 years ago, lived 87 and held power for more than 60 (between 1,279 and 1,213 BC) and built many of the great monuments of the Ancient Egypt.

The Grand Museum’s opening date has been delayed numerous times. But in the end the wait seems to end and it only remains to define small details for the ceremony who awaits the arrival of presidents, kings and a delegation of diplomats from all over the world.

The continuous bustle of moving pieces, objects, statues from the Old Museum to the East is endless, its main attraction, the private collection of King Tut-Ank-Amon’s trousseau, has been left for last, so as not to empty the museum of content.
