[72]Describe the beginnings of socialismsocialism and the founding of the LabourLabour Party

Оглавление

founding of the LabourLabour PartyAt the beginning of the 19th century political authority was in the hands of landowners, merchants, and aristocrats in Parliament, but by the end of the century much had changed. We’ve just read about DisraeliDisraeli’s extension of the franchise (the right to vote) to the working classworking classes. Another reform was the legalization of trade unions. The Fabian SocietyFabian Society, founded by a group of influential socialists like the authors H.G. WellsWells, H.G. and George Bernard ShawShaw, George Bernard, believed that the whole community should own a country’s land, natural resources, and wealth. The growing powerpower of the workers led to the founding of the LabourLabour Party around the turn of the 20th century with its goals of moderate socialismsocialism under the guidance of Parliament. Before we leave the 19th century for good, we have to return to a topic that has been a leitmotif throughout British history.
