Shortly after being elected to the Church Assembly in 1960 at the age of 30 I was invited to a conference on the laity by Bishop John Robinson, later author of Honest to God. It was the first time I had heard the phrase that has stayed with me ever since: ‘The laity are not the helpers of the clergy so that the clergy can do their job, but the laity are the whole people of God so that they can be the Church.’
