What to Aim For

Given that the level of ambition is dependent on your starting point, it's useful at this point to examine some different starting points that are real life examples. Of course, the ambition will depend on other aspects too—such as corporate direction, size, and quality of team—but the starting point is often just a function of these. These examples will provide good indicators of what your ambition should be.

Firstly, we will look at a Procurement function with lots of history, a sizeable team, but no real standing in the business. Next, a Procurement function that has started to gain traction with its organization through two years of impressive cost savings delivery in a company that traditionally had no professional Procurement, and finally a Procurement organization that has consistently delivered year-on-year commercial benefits for its company for a decade.
