“Okay, tell me the combination.”

“Nine . . . eleven . . . six.”

Charlotte turned the combination lock as Alex read the numbers.

“Hmmm,” said Charlotte. “That’s weird. It doesn’t open for me either.”

“So, I’m not crazy. It is broken!”

“Are you sure this is the right locker?”

“Yes. Six eighty-eight. I’ve got it written down right here,” Alex opened

her hand to reveal a crumpled piece of paper.

Puzzled, Charlotte looked up at the bank of numbered lockers.

Suddenly, a realization hit her.

“Can I take a look at that slip of paper?” she asked. “I bet I know what the

problem is!”
