Men of Renown: Many polytheistic civilizations had legends of great men performing great feats. These were the Neplilim, the unholy offspring of the angelic like creatures and earthy women. After the fall God had limited His revelation to the new nation He was forming, Israel. The rest of mankind was left to the memories of those of the distant past who had become mighty men, men of renown and mythic gods. These men of renown took the form of a mixture of human and divine with great powers. For instance men worshipped Venus, Mars, Jupiter or Zeus, Saturn, Gilgamesh, Osiris, Isis,Tammuz, Poseidon, Hades, Jason, Anubis, Horus, Hercules Thor, Perseus, the gods of Olympus, Odysseus, the Planets,Hathor, Geb, , Amun, Aton Bastet, Baal, Artemus or Diana. There are hundreds more but all these gods/men had great powers and were definitely renown during their time as later societies’ legends and myths were derived from this pre-flood period.
ОглавлениеNearly every ancient civilization worshipped many gods usually tied to what they called “nature”. Fertility gods were the strongest, bestowing good crops and children. A discussion of every god in every civilization is beyond the scope of this book but well-known civilizations worshipped many gods who were remnants and memories of these “men of renown”. Baal was a predominant fertility god.
The purpose of God bringing the flood was: “NOW it came about, when men began to multiply on the face of the land, and daughters were born to them, that the sons of God [corrupt beings] saw that the daughters of men were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves whomever they chose” These creatures were called in the Bible “Sons of God” for that is what they were until they rebelled against the Almighty and became reprobate.
“Then the LORD said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, because he also is flesh; nevertheless his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.” The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown”. There is a lot said here that is not being said mainly because the Bible is not a history book but a spiritual one. It is God speaking to HIS people, emphasizing what they need to know at the time. But we will read between the lines and try to explain what these verses are getting at.
What is the history of these Nephilim? In Genesis 6 we read that they brought such satanic corruption that God decided to destroy mankind. Verse 2 says that the sons of God [corrupt beings] saw the daughters of men and produced children by them, a strange breed. These were the giants and the men of renown of ancient times (Genesis 6:4). Keep that word giants in your mind. Nephilim are related to producing giants to stand against the people of God. When the Nephilim had filled the earth with corruption, God decided that the only solution was to destroy mankind. He took eight righteous people, Noah and his family, into the ark and delivered them; but He had to destroy everything else. The only possible solution to the corruption that the Nephilim had brought to the human race was to destroy the race. It is very important to remember that (Stevens, John Robert: This Week, Volume IX (1978 p.121).
We see later that even the flood did not kill all the Nephilim because they appear again as Joshua was conquering the Promised Land (Numbers 13:33). They were called the sons of Anak. The spies Moses sent discovered them: “So they went up and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin as far as Rehob, at Lebo-hamath. When they had gone up into the Negev, they came to Hebron where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, the descendants of Anak were” (Nu 13:21-22). Goliath was of the tribe of Gath, also an offspring of the Nephilim (giants) (1 Sam 17).
“Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. And the LORD said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, from man to animals to creeping things and to birds of the sky; for I am sorry that I have made them.” But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD” (Gen 6:1-8).
.
Satanic influence after the flood came forth from one of the sons of Noah, Ham. “Then Noah began farming and planted a vineyard. And he drank of the wine and became drunk, and uncovered himself inside his tent. And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brothers outside. But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it upon both their shoulders and walked backward and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were turned away, so that they did not see their father’s nakedness. When Noah awoke from his wine, he knew what his youngest son had done to him. So he said, “Cursed be Canaan; A servant of servants He shall be to his brothers.” He also said, “Blessed be the LORD, The God of Shem; And let “May God enlarge Japheth And let him dwell in the tents of Shem; And let Canaan be his servant.” And Noah lived three hundred and fifty years after the flood. So all the days of Noah were nine hundred and fifty years, and he died” (Ge 9:20–29). So Noah cursed Ham and his son Canaan which would have a lasting effect on Israel.
From Ham and Canaan’s descendants came satanic offspring nations that harassed Israel throughout their existence. “The sons of Ham [one of Noah’s sons] were Cush and Mizraim and Put and Canaan… Cush became the father of wicked Nimrod who became a mighty one on the earth. He was a mighty hunter before the Lord; therefore it is said, “Like Nimrod a mighty hunter before the Lord” (Ge 6; 1…8-9). And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel [which evolved into Babylon]… in the land of Shinar. Nimrod was a satanic figure, the founder of the church of mystery Babylon [Revelation 17-18] and a part of the building of the Tower of Babel. He was known as a great hunter, as he was a hunter of souls to seduce to become a part of the Mystery Babylon religion, condemned in Revelation 17-18.
“From that land Nimrod, son of Cush, went forth into Assyria, and built Nineveh and Rehoboth-Ir and Calah, and Resen between Nineveh and Calah; that is the great city [all wicked pagan sites] And Mizraim became the father of Ludim and Anamim and Lehabim and Naphtuhim and Pathrusim and Casluhim (from which came the Philistines) and Caphtorim” And Canaan became the father of Sidon, his first-born, and Heth and the Jebusite and the Amorite and the Girgashite and the Hivite and the Arkite and the Sinite and the Arvadite and the Zemarite and the Hamathite; and afterward the families of the Canaanite were spread abroad. And the territory of the Canaanite extended from Sidon as you go toward Gerar, as far as Gaza; as you go toward Sodom and Gomorrah” (Gen 10:15-19). As we know the Canaanites inhabited the entire area of Palestine, future home of Israel—the Promised Land. These satanic, polytheistic nations, were defeated by Joshua and Israel inhabited the land. The Canaanites they defeated were descended from Canaan, son of Ham.
The Tower of Babel: Now the whole earth used the same language and the same words. And it came about as they [Nimrod etc] journeyed east, and they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and burn them thoroughly.” And they used brick for stone, and they used tar for mortar. And they said, “Come, let us build for ourselves a city, and a tower whose top will reach into heaven, and let us make for ourselves a name; lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.” And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built. And the Lord said, “Behold, they are one people, and they all have the same language. And this is what they began to do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will be impossible for them. “Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.” So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of the whole earth; and they stopped building the city. Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of the whole earth; and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of the whole earth” (Gen 11:1-9). Babel means Babylon in Hebrew so this point was the beginning of the mystery Babylon religion. Once humankind spoke one language, but when people settled in Shinar (understood by most modern scholars as Sumer), “they purposed to make bricks and building materials and build a city and tower ‘with its top in the heavens, and…make a name for [themselves], lest [they] be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth” (Gen. 11:4).
In their anger at God for sending the flood they began building a high tower, the tower of Babel. Nimrod, among other things, was a high priest of the religion of Babylon. They proposed to build the tower high enough so that God could not flood them again. And they wanted a place like the men of renown from before the flood. They wanted to make a name for themselves. They said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and burn them thoroughly.” The tower was man’s futile attempt to reach God by their own works. They thought they could build it high enough to reach heaven. The men were afraid of another flood that they could escape if they built the tower high above the waters. They were angry at God for the first flood and this motivated them to reach God (The History of Babylon, Kenneth B. Alexander from Science and God).
The Plain of Shinar, (shīʹnahr) was a district of Babylonia in southern Iraq. According to Gen. 10:10, the Plain of Shinar included Babel (Babylon), Erech (Warka), and Accad or Akkadia in central Mesopotamia close to Baghdad. The Tower of Babel is said to have been built in ‘a plain in the land of Shinar’ (Gen. 11:2). ‘Amraphel king of Shinar’ was one of the four kings who, according to Genesis 14, invaded the Dead Sea region, kidnapped Lot, and were subsequently pursued and defeated by Abraham at ‘Horbah, north of Damascus’ (Gen. 14:1-16). One of these kings was Amraphel, king of Shinar, who is known to us as Hammurabi. Hammurabi was the first one to codify the Babylonian law and was the most famous of the early Babylonian kings, but God anointed Abraham to come against him and his allies and to prevail over them.
From the line of Shem, came Abraham. Third generation Terah became the father of Abraham. Haran, Abraham’s brother became father of Lot. Terah in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldeans. And Abram and Nahor took wives for themselves. The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor’s wife was Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and Iscah. And Sarai was barren; she had no child. And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram’s wife; and they went out together from Ur of the Chaldeans in order to enter the land of Canaan; and they went as far as Haran, and settled there. (Gen 11:10-11, 24-32).
So after the flood. Noah’s sons populated the world but deceit was found within the heart of Ham and Cannon. Satan had slipped through the flood that was supposed to destroy all evil in the world. Through the line of Ham came the pagan nations of the world that were to inhabit Mesopotamia and other parts of the world.
God determined to destroy the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, built near the Dead Sea. An angel came and warned Lot and his family but they were reluctant to leave. The evil atmosphere of Sodom had influenced their dedication to God. But Lot, his wife and daughters finally fled Sodom. The Lord rained fire and brimstone upon the cities including Zoar. Current archeological information hints that Chinese astronomers recorded a meteor hit the earth far north of the cities but the fallout (hot embers, fire and brimstone) rained down destroying the city. The angels from God told the fleeing group not to look back of the destruction of Sodom but Lot’s wife looked back and was turned to a pillar of salt. She was apparently still bonded to her home in Sodom and couldn’t resist (Genesis 19:1-20). In the historical account of Josephus he reports seeing the pillar some 2000 years ago.
“And Lot went up from Zoar, and stayed in the mountains, and his two daughters with him; for he was afraid to stay in Zoar; and he stayed in a cave, he and his two daughters. Then the first-born said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is not a man on earth to come in to us after the manner of the earth. “Come, let us make our father drink wine, and let us lie with him, that we may preserve our family through our father.” So they made their father drink wine that night, and the first-born went in and lay with her father; and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose. And it came about on the morrow, that the first-born said to the younger, “Behold, I lay last night with my father; let us make him drink wine tonight also; then you go in and lie with him, that we may preserve our family through our father.” So they made their father drink wine that night also, and the younger arose and lay with him; and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose. Thus both the daughters of Lot were with child by their father. And the first-born bore a son, and called his name Moab; he is the father of the Moabites to this day. And as for the younger, she also bore a son, and called his name Ben-ammi; he is the father of the sons of Ammon to this day” (Ge 19:30–38). So this incestuous relationship gave rise to two tribes that would oppose Israel-The Moabites and the Ammonites.
