There are thus four important structural dimensions to the notion of the global political city that make it something at once more diffuse and also much more consequential in sociopolitical terms than a simple municipal unit, especially in the information age. Those four elements are the policy advisory complexes (penumbras of power) that analyze information; the political forums that deliberate on information; the grassroots advocacy groups that critique information; and the leaders who act on information. Collectively, the institutions of the global political city provide an information-centric governance system, potentially capable of rapid, if decentralized, responses to emerging global problems within a given city’s chosen area of specialization.
