Chapter 2: Political Instability

Оглавление

2.1. Polarization of Society

Political polarization in the United States has reached a critical point, becoming one of the most noticeable and concerning phenomena of contemporary society. Conflicts between the major parties, the Republican and Democratic, have become more intense and aggressive, making constructive dialogue and cooperation increasingly difficult. Previously possible compromises have virtually disappeared, leading to government paralysis and delays in making important decisions.

This divide in society is manifesting not only in politics but also in the everyday lives of citizens. People are increasingly separating based on political views, creating tension in social relationships, especially among family members and friends. Social media exacerbates the situation by facilitating the spread of extreme opinions and creating «information bubbles» where users interact only with those who share their views.

Polarization also leads to an increase in violence and conflicts on the streets, reflecting the deepening dissatisfaction of citizens with the existing system. In such conditions, a sense of hopelessness and alienation arises, undermining the foundations of democracy and civil society.

2.2. Populism and Radicalization

Populist movements, such as the Tea Party movement and the support for Donald Trump, have demonstrated how citizens’ dissatisfaction with the system can lead to radical changes. These movements emerged against the backdrop of economic instability, social justice, and the feeling that traditional political elites do not represent the interests of ordinary people.

Populism employs emotional appeals, simple solutions, and catchy slogans to win the favor of voters. This creates a contrast with complex and often convoluted political issues that require detailed analysis and discussion. Populist leaders typically present themselves as the «voice of the people,» challenging the status quo and calling for change.
