Chapter 1. I’m going to the end of the world
ОглавлениеMy new friends and I are going on a long journey with bcm. I really hoped then that it would be fascinating and enjoyable. Before deciding on this adventure, I thought about it for several months. The construction team was supposed to be my summer practice. I switched to the second year of the paramedic department and in the near future I planned to link my life with medicine and work in the ambulance. The choice between whether to work for a month in the admissions committee of our school or to go to the cold Sea of Okhotsk for two months to harvest fish was obvious to me.
I wanted to see the world. So I tried to think, although there was a more weighty reason, Then I didn’t know that it would be so difficult and how it would turn out. Vague doubts tormented me, but I did not listen to them, and yet decided to go across half the country to the Far East, almost without hesitation. And it would be worth considering whether it is necessary to leave my family and home and go to the ends of the earth.
At the end of July, I packed my simple luggage – a small bag with things and went to the regional center, where I studied at the place of our gathering. There we boarded a bus and drove to the neighboring city, where the airport we needed was located.
At first, the streets of our city floated past the windows of the bus, then large wide fields, birch copses, sometimes replaced by small towns and villages. In Novosibirsk, a large plane pleased me at the airport. Flying in such an airplane is much more pleasant than in a small one. After a few hours of flight during the transfer, we were able to stretch a little and have a snack. A couple of hours later, the plane was waiting for us again.
A few hours of flight and, finally, the clouds disappeared, then small boxes appeared, like toy houses, the plane was thoroughly shaken, periodically the ears were laid. The long-awaited landing. In Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, an unfriendly gray sky and fine rain were waiting for us. We left the warm dry plane, and immediately felt the beauty of the dampness and dankness around us.
The air, filled with moisture, seemed to envelop with water dust, turning into a thick fog, then into rain. From Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk airport by bus we went to a local hotel. We had to wait a few days for the ship, as it turned out, it goes twice a week to the island where we need to get to. Three days passed pretty quickly. Walking around a small town brightened up our expectation.
We arrived at the seaport in the morning. Warm sun rays warmed everything around. They came as a surprise after a constant fine cold rain. Bright, eye-catching, and at the same time transparent light flooded the pier.
It was an unimaginably beautiful sight. The turquoise light came from the water and struck with its splendor. The greenish tint in it gave a mystery, apparently, so much green that was in the air, because of the sun reflecting off the sea water. Fat seagulls shouted loudly over each other, like traders at a bazaar. I had to wait half a day for boarding the ship.
During this time, everyone managed to fry under the scorching rays of the sun. The clothes stuck to the body on the back and chest, became wet, and the stomach rumbled. The girls and I were propping up the corner of the building near the water, greenish, with a barely perceptible smell of mud. I leaned my back against the wall, hoping to get at least some coolness from the concrete slab, but it didn’t really help. My short blue shorts, tight-fitting thighs, and a white T-shirt allowed me to feel at least a little light breeze. These are my favorite shorts. My father brought them to me from a business trip when he went to Belarus. A white T-shirt in the heat was the best thing I could choose from my poor wardrobe to wear in the heat.
A light breeze occasionally brought a little relief from the heat, pleasantly chilled the bare neck, arms and legs. I put my soft brown hair in a ponytail in the morning before we took the bus to the port.
– The girl! Hi! – turning around, I saw a stranger smiling. Embarrassed, she smiled back, nodded and looked questioningly at her fellow traveler Lena. She shrugged her shoulders:
– I don’t know him, like, from the Polytechnic.
Several students of our construction team passed, chewing pies on the go. The smell of food hit the nose, aggravated the feeling of hunger, the mouth filled with saliva.
– Girls, I suggest we run for pies, – I looked questioningly at my new friends. They chipped in and sent messengers. Ten minutes later, the delicious pastries were already melting in each of us in our mouths. We are very hungry, and the pies are so delicious.
Finally, the landing was announced. Excitement swept through everyone. Half asleep, exhausted in the heat, we stepped onto the ship. I felt that my life was changing in some incomprehensible way. Something has happened, although nothing has changed around. The sun was still shining brightly, and the glare of the water made my eyes hurt a little. With relief and joy we went into the cabin. With one of the girls, we stayed together all the way from the place of departure. She’s one of the people I made friends with, Lena from the Polytechnic. Next to us are two more girls from another faculty of my school. Getting acquainted. Alla and another Lena. They’re midwives. We don’t have much time to sail. They say no more than a day, tomorrow we will be on the spot.
The ship moved away from the pier. Everything is so unusual. I stood on the deck for a long time. There are a lot of our students here. I didn’t know them all, but I recognized them by sight. Our construction team consists of students from different universities and our school. I’m the only one of the girls in my group. I wasn’t sad that I didn’t know many people. We already got to know the girls from the cabin and several others well and constantly communicated, as we lived together in a room in the hotel for several days while waiting for the ship.
The water surface behind the stern is blue-black, there is no hint of green. The ship is already in the open sea, there is solid black water around. How everything changed when the coast disappeared from sight. We were standing next to a boy from our squad. He’s from Biysk. Admired the view, discussed the water and the sunset. A sunny road has now appeared on the black surface.
– It’s beautiful, isn’t it? – he asked, pointing with a nod at the setting sun and its reflection in the water.
– Yes, great! I replied.
– Have you noticed that names have color? Each name has a different one, he asked.
– Always. For example, Vladimir’s name color is blue, Peter’s is black, Marina’s is red. We discussed this topic for a long time. It’s strange that someone shared my thoughts about this. I’ve never encountered such people before. Touching the medallion on my neck with my fingers, I hugged him with my palm. Silver with a blue stone in the middle, it’s a gift from my father, reminding me of home. My father died not so long ago due to a heart attack. I was going through it very hard. Three difficult years have passed. Now Mom and little Maxim stayed at home, and I already missed them.
By the evening of the next day, we saw land on the horizon. Hurray! True, the journey is not a burden to me, but poor Alla has been yellow-green since the departure, she does not eat anything at all because of nausea. And the girls and I went to a restaurant and ate a crab salad.
When the ship stopped, everyone was waiting for their turn to leave our temporary shelter. We transferred to a barge, swam to the pier on it and went ashore. «Kitovy settlement» – I read the inscription in large letters on the pier. On the ground, we were mercilessly rocked from side to side. We walked and laughed merrily.
