Chapter 7

Barbara chuckled, “Well, thanks again.” She took one last gulp of coffee and wrinkled her nose. “It always amazes me how much alcohol you can drink without a smidgeon of a hangover the next day.”

“The secret is having something rich in your belly before the gush of alcohol. Of course, you wouldn’t know ‘cause you always want to save your calories for the tasty dinner salad you usually order. “ Her eyebrows lifted. “But I’m surprised. This time you actually ordered something to weigh down those lettuce leaves. That salmon was—”

“That reminds me: Who’s the big fish this time? It’s not Nick, is it?”

Carol shivered. “God no! The one I was talking to all night. Duh! You were that wasted? Anyways, he doesn’t look like it but he’s delicious.”

“Taken a bite yet?”

Carol punched her. “Well, of course, silly!” She whispered, “I think he’s the one. His name’s John. He’s in some kind of business. Oh… Well, something.”

“Something. I can’t wait to meet the lucky hunk who stole my man-hungry girlfriend’s heart and isn’t Nick or Carl and is in some kind of business.”

Carol’s eyes crinkled. “All right, you might not remember him from last night but I’m sure you’ll get another chance.” Her smile faded away as she rested her chin on her hand. She was suddenly miles away, probably imagining strolling hand-in-hand with this John-guy on a beach in Acapulco.

Barbara broke into her friend’s daydream. “So, how long have you known him?”

“Almost a month—“

Barbara exclaimed in mock astonishment, “My God, that’s longer than the two weeks with Bill.”

“Yeah, and a month is certainly enough time to know that John’s the right one.”

Barbara cupped her friend’s hand but raised and lowered her well-tended eyebrows, “So you’re definitely giving up your tomcatting ways? For sure?”

Carol picked at a jagged nail and mumbled more to her self than to her friend, “Won’t be hard. I’m getting tired of the single life anyways.”

Barbara laughed, “Oh gosh, Carol. You’ll never tire of the single life.” Her face lost its smile and she rubbed at her forehead. “Why is it that we seem to be drinking a lot more than a year ago?”

Carol stuck out her lower lip. “I’m afraid that you’ve become a lush, Barb. Me? My drinking habits haven’t changed.”
