Note to the reader
This book is an up-to-date English version of the Spanish work entitled «El Inventor Artificial. Un reto para el Derecho de Patentes», published in May 2020.
This version includes all the updates and revisions experienced by the specific regulations regarding Artificial Intelligence. In particular, last 20 April 2021, a new Proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council laying down harmonised Rules on Artificial Intelligence (Artificial Intelligence Act) and amending certain Union Legislative Acts [COM (2021) 206 final] was published in order to promote the development of Artificial Intelligence and address the potential high risks it poses to safety and fundamental rights. Also, some national legislations have been modified to some extent or are about to.
A revision of the WIPO´s actions in relation to Artificial Intelligence and Intellectual Property is also incorporated in this version along with other performances that have run their course, as it happens with the DABUS case.
Finally, a glossary of terms has been added in order to clarify the meaning of some specific Spanish terms that have been translated without existing their equivalent in English, and also to include the newly created terms introduced by this author.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ingrid Canales Rapalo for her close collaboration in the translation of this piece of work.
