Writing a book from my doctoral dissertation is harder than I thought, and more rewarding than I could ever imagine. This book could not have been possible without the support, advice, and expertise of a number of wonderful people. First of all, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to J. Paul Rajashekar for his supervision during my doctoral studies. Paul provided a perfect balance of guidance and independence for my work. He inspired me to find my voice in writing. He would unhesitatingly help me to stay focused and on track, throughout the duration of research and writing. I am also deeply indebted to John F. Hoffmeyer, for his constructive feedback on my dissertation manuscript. John extended a great amount of assistance. His comments and questions were insightful that helped widen my research focus.

I am eternally grateful to Craig L. Nessan. Craig is a great mentor. He offered valuable guidance on my journey, in particular the time I spent my formative years in Dubuque, Iowa. He was tremendously supportive. He identified the sources of support for connection in doctoral program, and he introduced me to Matthew Wimer of Wipf and Stock Publishers. Matt is friendly and easy to work with. I thank him for helping to bring this work into publication under the Pickwick Publications imprint.

My special thanks go to Rev. Margaret Payne, former bishop of the New England Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Thank you for reading my multiple drafts and sending me helpful editing notes.

Last but not least, I owe a huge debt of gratitude to my husband for his immense support, love, and patience over the years. Because of his caring and thoughtfulness, I am able to follow my dream without worrying about failure too much. He is always the one I could turn to during the ups and downs. I am so thankful and blessed to have these people in my life. You make me a better person. Thank you for all the meaningful conversations and shared memories.
