THE WATER-COLOURS OF BABAJI

Оглавление

The paintings included as pictorial commentaries for this project were chosen because of their focus on creation as being of transcendent origin, and because their vision of nature and the elements reveal a dimension of time `before time was.' They portray the multi-dimensional transformative powers of divine creative potential, which they share with the oldest prayers of humankind.

Since time immemorial the landscapes of the Himalayas have been venerated as the dwelling place of the gods with their unending succession of mountain ranges, valleys, torrents, grassy slopes and forests, the icy pinnacles of their mountain tops offering vistas of limitless horizons.

Where heaven and earth meet in pristine purity and where the physical eye may perceive how time blends into eternity there the cosmic drama of Shiva's dance unfolds.

Suffused by a divine light in limitless space, and far above the world of humans, the star-studded skies and luminous mountains, pacific water places, subterranean fire-paths and rich, green pastures — there, in the eyes of the visionary, all nature is one.

In infinite variety, poised for the creation of ever new worlds, earth and sky together reflect the transformative process of how light changes into substance, form and colour.

Babaji's water-colours show the landscapes as part of a process of endless becoming, yet in the dynamic, creative unfolding which gives them form, they remain transparent, echoing in the individual onlooker deep memories of the soul's journeys through time.

'I will burn fire and water together,

And I will be in the middle of fire and water —

I will remain there, whatever happens...

You were born in the storms,

And you must have the courage

to fight the storms...

Don't be afraid of death, nor of the storm,

nor of water or fire —

Life itself is water and fire.'

Shri Babaji

The fire that was held in the earth is now ablaze, consuming with the crescendo of its scorching flames all that needs to be transformed by burning. The deed of purification accomplished, a golden light illuminates a new earth and a new heaven, revealing a paradise of harmony.

Often Babaji would begin to paint with a drawing of geometric, yantra-like designs using these as the painting's inner, spiritual structure, he proceeded to add various layers of colour, using a typical paint-dabbing movement of the brush, so that these lines were no longer visible.

All paintings are `signed' with the prayer Babaji taught everyone who came to him, written deeply into the earth, or drawn boldly across the sky:

Om Namah Shivay — Lord, I bow to You within, Thy will be done.

`Soulscapes'

And he wanted the paintings to find their way into the world through those to whom he gave them.
