PEG, age ten. British Indian. Mixed blood. Her mother was originally from India, and her father is English. A new student at a private girl’s school in London. Smart, pretty, and kind. Faced with odds she can’t seem to fight against. Must be played by a South Asian actor.
GRANDMOTHER, in her early sixties. Peg’s beautiful grandmother, who writes to her every week from India. She worked hard from a young age and became a designer, securing a better life for her family. Soft-spoken, graceful, and insightful. Must be played by a South Asian actor.
IRON SOLDIER FIGURINES:
Francis “PEGGY” Pegahmagabow, age twenty-one. Ojibway. The most decorated military sniper in the Canadian army in World War I. An expert sniper, marksman, and scout. A leader and activist in life, and leader of the IRON SOLDIER FIGURINES. Must be played by an Indigenous actor.
HENRY Louis Norwest, age twenty. Cree. A highly decorated famous sniper from World War I. An ex-rodeo performer. Deadly, but with a kind heart. Must be played by an Indigenous actor.
PRIVATE GEORGE McLean, age eighteen. Interior British Columbia Salish. Another highly decorated sniper from World War I. An ex-rancher. A skinny guy with a strong instinct. Must be played by an Indigenous actor.
The actors playing the IRON SOLDIER FIGURINES also play:
TWO TEACHERS. Teachers at York Girl’s School, one of whom is MRS. FREED, aged sixty. An almost-retired teacher.
MS. HALL, age forty-five. The dean of York Girl’s School.
IT GIRLS, age thirteen. Three bigger-than-life bullies. Students at the same private girl’s school.
ENEMY SOLDIER SHADOWS.
Setting and Time
PLACE: York Private Girl’s School, London.
TIME: The present.
SET: A simple set with a backdrop that can construct and create shadows and projection.
SHADOW PLAY AND PROJECTIONS: Where characters are described as shadows they might also be realized by video, depending on strategy.
LIGHTING: Should be able to create hallways and battlefields in the classroom. Dark and light, shadows that become real.
COSTUMES: The costumes for the IRON SOLDIER FIGURINES and for the IT GIRLS and all other characters should be towering above everything else. Exaggerated and bigger-than-life.
