Preface

Оглавление

The history of woodcarving goes back to the early ages, and woodcarving has continued to grow and thrive as a handicraft today. Much of its success can be attributed to the continued development of the tools and techniques of the trade, allowing for contemporary interpretations of diverse themes in woodcarving. Believing in the constant need for growth, the Geisler-Moroder Austrian Woodcarving School has created contemporary carving methods that help to push woodcarving to the next level.

However, even the specialized knowledge in the Geisler-Moroder Austrian Woodcarving School is based on a rich and longstanding tradition. The Geisler-Moroder family has spent over 400 years in the field of woodcarving arts and crafts. Here, preserved tradition and new teaching and learning methodology have merged.

A hallmark of the Geisler-Moroder Austrian Woodcarving School’s method is working with planes and surfaces, which is described step-by-step in this book. Based on the theories of proportion, it is possible to approach the realistic representation of the human head. This method also teaches a special way of observation; at all times during the process of carving, the carver learns to see the object of the carving as if it were composed of cubical forms. Additionally, in this book, a wide range of possibilities for the refinement of details is given.

A solid artistic technique is the foundation for every high-quality piece of art. That is why the goal of this book is to present easy-to-understand visual instructions for mastering the carving of the human head. The step-by-step instructions provide the groundwork for the basic composition of your piece, and the examples in the gallery at the back of the book offer you ideas and inspiration. Once you have completed the step-by-step project and have learned the techniques, you will be able to extend the skills acquired to your other projects.

We wish you much success in creating your artwork and encourage you to let your own ideas flow!
