Usually only seen describing darkness or depth, this word comes from the River Styx, one of the nine rivers of the Underworld in Greek mythology. But Styx was also the name of a goddess, the chief supporter of Zeus in the war of the Titans, and therefore a ‘goodie’. Perhaps the ancient Greeks got confused.
