„Streichle niemals einen brennenden Hund!“

Manchmal im Lauf ihrer acht gemeinsamen Jahre wehrten Hellmut Hattler (b) und Joo Kraus (voc, keyb, tr) die Umarmung des Bistrojazz nur mühsam ab. Auf „Between us“, aufgenommen für eine neue (und schon dritte) Plattenfirma resümiert das Ulmer Duo seine eigene Entwicklung dennoch sehr souverän. Mehr Text, mehr Melancholie, mehr Groove, viel Abwechslung: Eckpunkte des neuen Sounds. Joo Kraus hat endlich zum eigenen, nicht mehr so Miles-nahen Trompetenstil gefunden, Hattler macht dezent Druck aus dem Untergrund. Diverse Gäste tun dem Duo zudem gut. Vor allem die Sängerin Sandie Wollasch sorgt beim Titelstück geradezu für Hitappeal. Zum „Columbus of an unknown World“ (Songtext) werden Tab Two wohl nicht mehr. Aber manchmal reicht es ja auch, Brücken zwischen Regionen der bekannten Welt – Dance und Jazz – zu schlagen. Und das gelang Hattler/Kraus nie besser als hier.

Dieser tobende Schreihals soll der gleiche Typ sein wie der, der heute verinnerlichte Sinnsuche am Klavier betreibt? Er ist es. Aber damals, Anfang der 80er, klang Nick Cave mit der Birthday Party wie die Doors auf Speed. Welche Barriere auch immer existierte, sie rissen sie nieder. Jede denkbare Explosion passierte, kein Aggressionstabu wurde akzeptiert. „Live 81-82“ führt die eruptivsten Momente dreier Konzerte von damals zusammen – zum ersten und einzigen Konzertdokument der Band auf Tonträger. Eine ganz besondere Dimension expressionistischer Rockmusik. Vielleicht hätte Jim Morrison sie übertroffen, hätte er überlebt. Vielleicht. Aber eher nicht.
