I looked at the photographs of a girl surrounded by family and friends. She was beautiful. My first psychic thought was the difference – as always – between the eyes of the living and the dead. When somebody is dead, the eyes in their photographs become flat; there seems to be no light behind them.

Showing me the pictures, Robert and Louise were hoping I’d be able to pick up some information about Anne. But I knew, instantly, that I wouldn’t be able to do it. It was only a year since the bombing – too soon after her death for her to be able to come back and make contact. (Mostly, people return after a couple of years have passed and they have adjusted to being spirit.)

Robert and Louise’s need, too, was getting in the way. Before I begin a reading, I usually ask people not to tell me anything about themselves. I already knew too much about Robert and Louise: how desperate they were, how far they had travelled. I found it hard to be impassive. I could not get into the zone.

I broke the meeting to go to the toilet. Standing inside the cubicle, I called Eric.

‘Please give me a symbol, one thing about their daughter – just one thing to give them.’

I saw him smiling, telling me if I couldn’t do it on my own, it wasn’t the right time to do it. Knowing there would be no direct contact with their daughter, I went back in to the lounge to try to help Robert and Louise.
