Butterfly

Designed by Michael G. LaFosse

1 Pre-crease your paper as shown: First fold in half and unfold. Then, fold in the sides. You may experiment with different distances for the sides to be away from the center crease.

2 Turn the paper over.

3 Fold in half, short edge to short edge.

4 Move the top layer of the right half over to the left and flatten the paper. This is called a “squash fold.”

5 Squash-fold the other side to match.

6 Fold up the bottom corner to the middle of the top edge and bring it back down.

7 One at a time, squash-fold the left and right halves of the paper.

8 Squash fold in progress. Watch the “X” and “Y” corners.

9 Mountain- and valley-fold the middle to form a body.

10 The finished Butterfly.

4 Fold in the left and right corners to meet at the center.

5 Turn over, left to right.

6 Fold top two corners down to the colored point.

7 Fold in the left and right edges to meet in the middle.

8 Mountain- and valley-fold a series of parallel pleats to make overlapping segments.

9 Fold in half. Rotate the paper so that the head corner is on the right.

10 Push in the inside corners of the body segments. Repeat on the other side. Squash-fold the head corner to the left, over the front end of the body.
