Making a living by writing is a great way to live, and self-publishing only adds to the pleasure. You keep full control and make more money with every copy sold. You even have the opportunity to live somewhere you’ll enjoy living, possibly in contrast to where you’re living now.
This book will tell you all you need to know about self-publishing without resorting to vanity publishers. All that’s required from you is the ability to write well on topics that the book buying public will find interesting. How difficult can that be?
If you already self-publish, or plan to do so, you’re in good historical company. At one time or another so did Stephen King, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Horace Walpole, Honoré de Balzac, Walt Whitman, Virginia Woolf, Gertrude Stein, John Galsworthy, Rudyard Kipling, Beatrix Potter, Lord Byron, Thomas Paine, Mark Twain, Upton Sinclair, WH Davies, Zane Grey, Ezra Pound, DH Lawrence, William Carlos Williams, Alexander Pope, Robbie Burns, James Joyce, Anaïs Nin, Lawrence Stern, and William Blake. Blake even mixed his own inks. I’m not going to suggest you go that far.
I must include the writer who started off his book writing career by self-publishing and who doubtless deems himself fortunate in having his travelogues in some book stores next to my Two Men in a Car, which no doubt helps increase the sales of his books: Bill Bryson.
If you’re going to succeed as a writer, I recommend you do so on your own terms. By all means read books about writing, but only use the advice that is consistent with how your mind works – not how you might like it to work, perhaps like Stephen King’s – and reject the advice that isn’t consistent. Become a distinctive writer. That’s surely the way to maximise your chances of becoming a successful writer. At the very least it’s the way to enjoy writing, which is important too.
In his bestseller On Writing Stephen King advises against using adverbs in association with dialogue: ‘she added, dreamily’ and the like. Well, I love adverbs in association with dialogue. Used well, they add a whole new dimension to dialogue. George Orwell used adverbs all the time.
As a writer I’m an optimist, but when I was an optimist as a publisher in my early days self-publishing I ordered sizeable print runs to lower the price per copy, and ended up with unsold copies – all at a low price per copy. So I developed the model for self-publishing which I’ve outlined in this book. It’s a low-risk and low-cost model which I term ‘commercial self-publishing’. If your books sell well – and I hope they will – you can very speedily move from one form of the model to another. If you only take one piece of advice from this book, let it be this: be an optimistic writer but a pessimistic publisher. Then, if your books don’t sell as well as you hope, at least you won’t have half a room or a garage filled with boxes of books to remind you daily that your books didn’t sell in the numbers you’d anticipated.
When reading books on self-publishing I was struck by the paucity of information on the business aspects of self-publishing. My business career had been in procurement, buying goods and services for major organisations. Over my 25 years in that field I had dealt with a large number of printers and I realised I could bring this experience to bear on my own venture into self-publishing. It seemed obvious to me that the most economical approach to self-publishing books – which looked as though they had been published by leading publishers – was to deal directly with the same printers and freelance professionals that the leading publishers deal with. So that’s what I did. Yes siree.
It has to be said that most self-published books are all too obviously self-published, including those published by most of the vanity publishers. Although vanity publishers seldom call themselves by that term, that’s what they are. They often present themselves as the catalyst required to deliver your undoubted genius to an otherwise inaccessible book-buying public. In reality there need be no such catalyst as that public is highly accessible at minimal cost.
A tip for you: go onto your Amazon website and key in a few of the book titles from the vanity publishers’ websites and check out where the books lie in Amazon’s sales rankings. As I’ll explain later, I did this with a number of book titles showing on a major vanity publisher’s website, where the writers were enthusiastic about the service they had received from the publisher. The books had all been published in recent years, and their sales rankings on Amazon were all between two and seven million. I recommend you don’t buy into the vanity publishers’ hype. Or if you do, don’t come moaning to me about the outcome.
The vanity publishers’ websites often intimate that they employ expert cover designers. Why, then, do most of the book covers on display on their websites – and you have to assume they pick the best designs for their websites – look so unimpressive? Because they use design templates, as we’ll see. Some of the vanity publishers’ business models and pricing structures are difficult to understand, and when services are offered they generally cost more than you’d pay for a top-flight freelance professional. And when they cost less, my hunch is that’s because they won’t do a professional job of, for example, proofreading. But you’ll never know that; you’ll only know they’ve improved your manuscript to an extent.
On the afternoon of 12 January 2010 I was busy working on my fifth book, a book of quotations, when my search led me to the Bob Dylan quotation which kicks off this introduction. Like all good quotations, it sparked off some thoughts. To be more precise, it made me think about my whole life.
At the age of 52, after 30 years working in business, I could claim to have had some success as a businessman. A good income had financed a good standard of living for many years, but I just wasn’t getting fulfilment from my work any more. I was much happier in the gaps between my assignments when I could write books and self-publish them.
At the age of 50, in 2008, my first book, Profitable Buying Strategies, was published internationally by Kogan Page, a leading publisher. It’s a book on corporate cost management, the field I’d worked in for 25 years. It’s been translated into Chinese, one of the odder-looking books in my library. Writing that book gave me the writing ‘bug’ and I wrote and self-published four more books in the ensuing two years, before this one:
Guitar Gods in Beds. (Bedfordshire: a heavenly county) – the colourful biographies of eight guitarists living in or near my adopted home town of Bedford.
Two Men in a Car (A Businessman, a Chauffeur, and Their Holidays in France) – a travelogue about two holidays in France with my friend and socialist chauffeur, Paul Carrington, whose autobiography is contained in Guitar Gods in Beds . The paperback edition isn’t available to order outside the United Kingdom; if you’d like to order a copy please email me on mikebuchanan@hotmail.co.uk. I’ve just made the book available at a recession-busting price as an ebook for Amazon’s Kindle device and other major e-readers, and the plate section of Two Men in a Car is located at the end of this book. The two books have different page sizes, this book having the larger pages of the two.
The Marriage Delusion: The Fraud of the Rings? – a book inspired by the breakdown of my second marriage. It argues that most people in the developed world in the modern era are unsuited to marriage. The title is available in both paperback and ebook editions as The Fraud of the Rings.
Buchanan’s Dictionary of Quotations for right-minded people – a collection of quotations for people with right-of-centre political persuasions. It was inspired by the then forthcoming 2010 general election in the United Kingdom, an election that the execrable left-wing administration which had been in power since 1997 was expected to lose – and duly did, I’m pleased to say. The American edition which has virtually identical content is imaginatively titled Buchanan’s Dictionary of Quotations for right-minded Americans.
I can honestly say I prefer self-publishing to being published, for a host of reasons. Higher income per copy sold, full creative control, no deadlines to distort the project, and more besides. Self-publishing can be very fulfilling if you go about it the right way, and it’s lucrative for a small number of writers. Dr Vernon Coleman, about whom I shall be saying more, has been a self-publisher for over 20 years – he now has over 100 books to his name – and he owns homes in Devon, London and Paris.
On occasion, when I was particularly fed up with my normal working life, I had fantasised about taking early retirement and focusing full-time on writing and self-publishing. It would require some ‘downsizing’ and a willingness to live more modestly, but that was an ever more appealing prospect with every month that passed. I just needed a gentle push or two in the right direction.
The Bob Dylan quotation at the start of this Introduction was the first push. The second push arrived ten minutes later. I was visiting Amazon.com to see if I had any new reviews from American readers. The Marriage Delusion had already received a couple of 5-star reviews from American lady readers, and a new review had been posted the previous day:

This is a brilliant and honest look at the realities of modern marriage. Mr. Buchanan bravely exposes the painful truths of why marriage isn’t working for most of us. He paints with very broad strokes to depict the sometimes subtle inconsistencies between our assumptions about marriage and the realities. For example, why some unhappily married people continue to extol the virtues of marriage. Particularly relevant for me was the description of introversion versus extroversion and the impact the different personality traits can have on marriage. As a happily divorced introvert, I feel vindicated. I now accept and appreciate that my singleness is a valid lifestyle choice for me as an introvert, and that my yen for solitude doesn’t make me a bad person. The book is filled with excellent excerpts from other writers that corroborate Mr. Buchanan’s observations. The writing defies political correctness, and it is well balanced. Buchanan’s candor is delightfully naughty. This is truly the most uniquely written book I’ve read in years.
I stood taller that day, I can tell you. And I have stood taller ever since. My thanks to Bob Dylan and Mary B for helping me realise that I should take the plunge and focus full-time on writing and self-publishing.
So at the ripe old age of 52 I took early retirement, cashed in my pension plans, and I am now enjoying spending my days writing and self-publishing. It’s been about eighteen months so far and I haven’t once regretted the decision to retire. I sometimes have to stop myself writing seven days a week – it just doesn’t seem like work. The publishing side is work, but it takes up little of my time. I’ve rarely been happier.
Books about self-publishing rarely cover the topic of quality adequately, if they cover it at all. I wanted to see if I could write and publish books which didn’t appear self-published, and after a lot of hard work I’d like to think I’ve succeeded. My readers tell me I have. And I’m doing what I want to do with my days so Bob Dylan thinks I’m a success, although he hasn’t had the good grace to tell me so. Typical.
In my professional career I bought countless different goods and services, but I never bought dreams. But I think that when writers – and especially new writers – spend money with vanity publishers on ‘publishing packages’, they’re buying dreams. Whatever a publisher may say, if you’re spending your own money to have the company publish your work, the company is a vanity publisher. Full stop. The only question is what type of vanity publisher they are.
I shudder when I visit some of the vanity publishers’ websites offering publishing packages. One is currently selling packages for almost £11,000. Another publisher states that your books can be printed in any one of a variety of fonts. Wow, like, amazing, man. They often have a range of templates for your material to be put into, which helps them keep their costs down. And your costs too, to be fair. But I don’t like any restrictions when it comes to my writing and publishing. I want to retain full creative and business control at all times.
The only restrictions I will accept – because I must – are those imposed by technology. And even then I’m not happy if I want to do something with a book that isn’t technically possible, or only possible at an uneconomic cost. Researching for this book led me to a vendor, CPI Antony Rowe, prepared to manufacture a single copy of a book with a colour plate section at a low cost, something I’d been seeking for some time.
At the time of writing this – August 2011 – if you order any of my books for delivery outside the UK, the chances are that it will have been printed by Lightning Source’s print-on-demand (POD) model. The copyright page early in the book will tell you who the printer was. Lightning Source is the largest POD book printer in the world, and Chapter 7 gives an account of its business model, a boon to publishers and self-publishers alike.
If you adopt my self-publishing model you’ll probably only need to deal with three parties: the printer, a copy-editor/proofreader, and a cover designer. Maybe a photographer too, if your cover requires a bespoke photograph. You may be surprised to learn that most book printers, even the largest, will be delighted to deal with you directly. Margins in the printing sector are perennially low, and printers can make a better margin from individual customers than they can from large corporate customers with buying power.
Self-publishing by dealing directly with third parties has a number of benefits other than cost. If you’re dealing directly with a printer which prints digitally – and indeed by offset lithography too, if you’re selling enough books to merit ordering in quantities of 300 copies or more – you will have a huge array of options when it comes to your book’s specification. There are fewer specification options with POD, where the book is only manufactured after a buyer has ordered the book. But the POD model has a number of benefits, financial and other, and I’ll be taking you through them.
At a number of points in the book I refer to a ‘standard’ book specification, especially when I’m trying to make points about costs. The specification should be taken to mean a 272-page paperback with a colour cover and black content text. The specification of this book excluding the plate section, as it happens. What are the chances?
I’ve adopted the increasingly popular convention of leaving the ‘www.’ prefix off website addresses, and I’ve put them in a smaller font than the surrounding text.
It took a lot of time and effort to track down the quotations I put into this book. If you’re a fan of quotations you might like to read through Appendix 1 before you start on Chapter 1. If you’re not, then don’t. Take my advice: reject my advice whenever you feel inclined to do so.
A few words about the cover images showing myself and my œuvre shortly before the publication of this book. The more fashion-conscious reader of a male persuasion interested in adopting the English gentleman look – and how could he not be? – will wish to learn the provenance of the elements of the look. He may be surprised that I’d be willing to divulge this information, but that’s the kind of chap I am.
The bespoke pure new wool suit was tailored by Austin Reed of Regent Street, London – tailors to the stars – and the shirt was bought from Charles Tyrwhitt of Jermyn Street, London. The silk tie came from Christian Dior’s legendary 1992 spring/summer collection, while the very comfortable brogues were manufactured by Cheaney in Desborough, Northamptonshire. The latter were recently repaired by Morgan, a family-run business in Cardiff, cobblers to the Welsh. I am informed by an acquaintance of the American persuasion that brogues are termed ‘wingtips’ in America. Extraordinary.
The umbrella was made by Fox Umbrellas in England, ‘Makers of the world’s finest umbrellas’. Their motto is, ‘Keeping you dry since 1868’. If you’re at least 143, then possibly. Out of sight but contributing to my evident joy are my navy blue pure cotton boxer shorts (Marks & Spencer’s 2009 autumn/winter collection) and red silk blend socks (Moorland Hosiery).
Spectacles from Specsavers – opticians to fashionable Englishmen and Englishwomen for generations – and hair by the lovely Samantha at Bedford’s Toni and Guy completes the look.

A word on my use of the word ‘he’ throughout the book when I refer to writers and readers generically. The term should be understood to mean both genders. Political correctness raises my blood pressure – don’t get me started on militant feminist politician Harriet Harman – and this is all I have to say on the subject.
A final thought on the terms ‘writer’ and ‘author’. Which should you call yourself? I’m inclined to call myself a writer on the grounds that until and unless a writer become very successful the term ‘author’ can sound a little pretentious. A bestselling writer once said he always called himself a writer, on the grounds that, ‘I write, I don’t auth.’ Until the next time.
