Prologue
ОглавлениеMoscow, Monday, May 14, 2012, Russian Cancer Research Center named after N. N. Blokhin, Sechenova I. M. doctor’s office, 10.50 a.m. – as I remember now, even small details of this “unforgettable day”.
A woman of about 50 years old is sitting at the table, wearing glasses, with gray hair, a strand of which carelessly covers her shoulders, in a white jacket, with a beautiful brooch in the shape of a scorpion, eager to bite the “next victim”.
I am full of energy, life plans, sitting opposite, in a very anxious state, in sneakers, jeans, a T-shirt, because of the beautiful summer weather in spring … + 20 C. There is a distinctly visible, through the muffled light on the picture, pea in the size of a walnut, circled by a marker.
Despite all the tragedy of the upcoming conversation, the doctor behaves strictly, reminding me of my class teacher Natalya Makarovna, apparently not letting her inner feelings convey to the patient her emotions. There was no special “prelude”; it was “dry”, one might say harshly, and went straight to the point and voiced an incomprehensible diagnosis to me – “embryonic brain tumor”. Later, I delved into the nuances – this is a rare inoperable form of brain cancer, which is most often found in children and adolescents. The probability of such a diagnosis in adults is 1 in 1 million patients with cancer, in other words, I hit the “anti-mega jackpot”. "You have 1 year left to live, if you are lucky – 2."
At this moment the memory flash pump up with the vision of the famous singer Bobby Darin, who at the age of 8 was diagnosed with an equally terrible diagnosis – heart disease, and predicted death in the coming years. Bobby Darin, widely known for his unique performance in several genres, starring in 12 movies, winner of 3 Grammy Awards, including one posthumously, left our world at the age of 37, living 4 times more than the time allotted to him by doctors
