The Transition Region
ОглавлениеThe transition region is a thin, very irregular layer that separates the chromosphere from the much hotter corona. In this region, the temperature increases rapidly from about 20,000ºC to 1,000,000ºC. At such high temperatures, hydrogen atoms are ionized (stripped of one or more electrons), making them difficult to see. Instead of hydrogen, the light emitted by this region is dominated by carbon, oxygen, and silicon ions. These charged particles emit ultraviolet light, so they can only be observed by spacecraft, such as Hinode and the Solar Dynamics Observatory.
