Wendel Swan, a Director of The Textile Museum of Washington, D.C. and Chairman of the Executive Committee of ICOC, former President of the International Haji Babas and of the Washington Textile Group, reviewed this second edition, corrected my errors and provided pictures of rugs. He supplemented many entries. I am very grateful for his efforts to make this a useful and reliable work.
Once again, Professor Emeritus John R. Perry of the University of Chicago, reviewed and corrected the spelling and derivation of Near Eastern terms. He suggested additional entries for the lexicon. His help has been invaluable.
If the Gods resent earthly perfection, I have nothing to fear. Surviving errors are my responsibility only.
Mary Jo Otsea of Sothebys, Nancy Grogan of Grogan and Company, and Jason Nazmyal provided a great many oriental rug illustrations. Their generosity has significantly enhanced the value of this work. Many others contributed illustrations and this is acknowledged under Graphics Sources.
David Baylen, R. John Howe, Edward Turner, and J. Barry O’Connell generously provided assistance.
For the First Edition
Walter B. Denny, Professor of Art History, University of Massachusetts at Amherst, edited this work. For authors, familiarity breeds myopia. Errors, both subtle and blatant, are the result. Walter Denny’s refreshing objectivity, great knowledge and care were invaluable in purging my many errors and lapses in judgment. The effort he has invested in the lexicon added substantially to its quality and usefulness.
Murray L. Eiland reviewed this work with scholarly skepticism. He raised questions and made suggestions that clarified the entries and improved their accuracy. His belief in the usefulness of this work encouraged me when my labors seemed endless and my commitment was flagging. I am deeply indebted to him.
George O’Bannon reviewed the manuscript with a special concern for entries dealing with Turkmen weavings and the rugs of Afghanistan. He corrected entries and suggested additional terms. I have benefited from George O’Bannon’s generosity through his reviews of my other books. I gratefully acknowledge his contributions to this one. Ron O’Callaghan, publisher of Oriental Rug Review and The Decorative Rug , reviewed entries dealing with the rug trade and market and suggested terms in this area. In addition, he permitted me to use illustrations from his publications. I thank him for these and many other kindnesses.
John R. Perry, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, University of Chicago, consulted on the spelling, derivation, and pronunciation of Near Eastern terms and place names. He contributed the article, Foreign Terms and Place Names . Both John Perry and Walter Denny corrected erroneous geographical references. If not for their corrections, I would have rearranged the surface of the globe without benefit of plate tectonics. Thanks to John Perry’s scholarship, this lexicon presents term derivations not previously familiar in oriental rug studies. He made fundamental contributions to this work. Parviz Tanavoli generously gave permission for use of certain illustrations. My thanks to Anahid Pridjian for her review of an entry.
The Chicago Rug Society, in the person of Suzanne Kaufman, gave generous permission for me to use photographs from the catalog, Mideast Meets Midwest . Michael Troppea was the photographer of the rugs in Mideast Meets Midwest .
For her sympathetic understanding and encouragement, this work is affectionately dedicated to Valerie Janet Ohlhausen.
