Peter Newell (1862-1924) began his career as an artist drawing portraits, using crayons as his medium. Early on he decided that the value of his work was in its originality, and, impatient of academic training, he left the Art Students' Eeague after only three months of study. This insistence on his own artistic freedom resulted in a style which is wonderfully spontaneous and varied — as can be seen in this ingenious and unique book.
