This exhibition was conceived in 2014 on a train from Paris to Marseille, while watching a group of young people making envelopes. Train journeys are good for thinking about stuff! I was day dreaming while looking at the processes they employed to create a simple paper wallet, it made me think about why designers (people in art and design really) love the tools they use. Some times these are digital tools, sometimes, inks, rollers, pens and brushes, certain files and tape measures, sharpening tools and tools for rounding edges, welding tools, tools that are antique or unique, processes that deliver certain results, creative values that are connected to the roots of our creative practice. Things that carry value, that identify designers and artists to themselves, tools and items of value that are rarely seen except in the studio, or the workshop, or design lab, these thoughts were really the seeds that have led to this exhibition.
