Adhesives
ОглавлениеThe vast array of wood adhesives on the market can be simplified for the weekend woodworker. First, a big favorite—two-part epoxy—is a remarkably strong glue. It is mainly used in boatbuilding and is widely available from marine supply or surf shops. Unfortunately, it is quite expensive.
You need to measure out the two components precisely and be aware of the ambient temperature. Use either plastic syringes or clear plastic containers marked on the side with graduations. The wearing of surgical gloves is advisable when mixing and applying epoxy, simply to protect your hands because the glue is difficult to remove from skin. When you use epoxy for the first few times, refer to the free data sheets provided.
PVA (polyvinyl acetate), the everyday white liquid glue that comes in plastic tubes, can also be purchased in a water-resistant version. Easy to use and cheap, it is not terribly strong, but adequate for most interior work.
Two-part filler, the elastic type, is often used in conjunction with lumber as a combination filler and adhesive. Buy it from a car paint supplier, where it should be considerably cheaper than a DIY store.
Filler adhesive needs to be applied with a caulk gun (mastic gun) and is sold under a variety of brand names. It is expensive, and once the tube is opened it goes off quite quickly, but it is ideal for rapidly gluing lumber that is not under any great stress.
Cascamite, a white, powdered resin glue mixed with water, is waterproof, dries clear, and is cheap and easy to use. Wear gloves when applying. It may have a different brand name locally.
