Dear Reader,

For our first home together, my husband and I bought a Victorian house built in 1904. We loved the grace and character of it – the high ceilings, the intricate mouldings, the gingerbread trim. We weren’t quite as crazy about the single-pane glass windows (painted shut!), the crumbling mortar and the lack of cupboard space.

We spent fifteen years in that house – refinishing wood floors, scraping off layer after layer of paint and wallpaper, replacing those wavy-glass windows with versions that had less charm but a great deal more energy efficiency.

As much as we loved our old house and poured our hearts into it, eventually we had to build one that met our family’s needs a little better.

When I was creating Brambleberry House, I took all my favourite things from our little redbrick Victorian – and all the elements I might have wished it had! – and incorporated them into the walls of the old house.

I hope you enjoy exploring the secrets of this sprawling mansion by the sea and the women who call it home.
