Odds and Ends From January/February 1917
ОглавлениеJanuary - The House Beautiful magazine had a long, illustrated article on the Esperanza mansion. It was written by a member of the Rose family. If you’re interested, we have copies of it in our files at YCHC.
There were two significant fundraising programs in operation in the community. Keuka College had been closed since 1915. There was a serious effort to raise money to create an endowment so they could reopen. The goal was $300,000. Meanwhile the Penn Yan Hospital Corporation was also busy trying to raise funds to build a hospital.
The ice harvest on Lake Keuka was well underway. In mid-February, two workers fell into the water as they were moving ice cakes along the channel to the ramp. Neither could swim but they were quickly rescued by other workers.
There was some concern about the water quality coming out of Lake Keuka. There were a number of articles in local papers on sand filtration systems.
The “Danish church” was planning to construct a new building on Hamilton Street in Penn Yan. It was to be known as St. Paul’s Lutheran. The papers mentioned that services were in Danish, but they would soon be offered in English.
