The Archipélago da Madeira is located 545 kilometers (338,65 miles) from the west coast of Africa and just under 1000 kilometers (621.37 miles) from Portugal in the Atlantic Ocean. The archipelago was created as a result of volcanic activity, which began some 20 million years ago undersea, and gradually built up the islands. It has been around 1.7 million years since this process has come to a standstill. Today, Madeira's volcanoes are extinct, the forces of erosion have eroded the soft tuff of the volcanic ashes and the basalt vents have been formed into rugged mountain peaks.
The steep relief of Madeira continues below sea level. The main island is as high as 5,000 meters (16404,2 feet) under sea level. Above the sea, the highest peak - Pico Ruivo - reach 1862 meter (6108,924 feet).
