The Formation of the Island
ОглавлениеThe group of islands of Santorini began her journey through the time about 2,000,000 years ago during the Pleistocene period. The Aegean archipelago at that time did not exist. The entire region of the Aegean Sea, and much of the current Greek mainland were covered by a single landmass.
It made the traffic over the land between Greece and todays Asia Minor possible. This is the explanation of why fossils have been found of large mammals such as elephants on many Aegean islands.
In that period began in the territory intensive geological shifts, which eventually caused the sinking of the landmass. As a result, some parts of it were covered with water, while others were lifted. In this way, the Cycladic islands were arise.
The island itself has been shaped through countless volcanic eruptions.
