During 1952-1953 these streamlined biographies were written for True, the Man's Magazine. I have had many requests from libraries and individuals to put them together in a book where they would be more permanent and easily accessible. The editors of True have kindly allowed me to do so.

When I was about to write the piece on Admiral Peary, I asked my old friend, the late Dr. William Herbert Hobbs, if I might use information which he had gathered for his carefully documented biography entitled Peary. He replied, "I am delighted and complimented."

My thanks are also due to his publishers, The Macmillan Company, New York. They have kindly supplemented Dr. Hobbs's permission to use some of the material of his book.

I have had access, also, to the personal, unpublished diary of the late George Borup, one of the staff of the successful North Pole expedition of 1908-1909.
