ОглавлениеPLEASE READ BEFORE YOU VISIT ANY OF THE LOCATIONS IN THIS BOOK.
AS THIS BOOK GOES TO PRESS, all the locations in it have public access through private tours or during open hours. Policies change, so please call and inquire before you visit them. Website addresses have been provided so that you can find access to information and policies. Not all locations in this book are open at night, nor is it suggested that you visit them after-hours. I do not advocate trespassing at any of these locations, as it is unlawful and I’m not paying your bail.
Many of these locales have uneven paths, so please watch your footing. Not all locations are handicap-accessible; please contact the venue for more information.
As with any venture, it’s highly advisable that you go to the location during the day to check things out. During the day, as well as at night, you run the risk of being seriously injured, and I strongly recommend that you take extra care in locations new to you. Some of the areas require a little hiking, so make sure you are physically fit, and be aware that wildlife such as rattlesnakes, coyotes, cougars—and man’s worst predator … man—may be at any of these locations. Security and crime in these areas fluctuate—so do your research! Lock up your equipment when not using it, be aware of your surroundings, and do bring a charged cell phone in case you need to call for emergency assistance. Also, you should let someone know where you are going and at what time you might return.
Please use discretion when investigating in public places such as restaurants, historic locations, cemeteries, and memorial locations. Allow those around you to conduct themselves without interruption and in privacy. Use common sense when investigating areas on or near roads—go during the day so you’ll be seen.
One last thing: please do not disturb any of the locations, and carry out your investigations without the use of flammables (candles, etc.)—Southern California is one big tinderbox. Many of these locations have survived a hundred years; all it takes is one investigator scratching up antiques or a wooden floor with his or her equipment to ruin it for the rest of us, so please tread lightly upon history. Above all, please listen to your intuition.
Enjoy your investigation, but please be responsible!
Thank you,
Sally Richards
