This may come as a surprise to a few of you men folk out there, but many women don't automatically know what to do with a newborn baby. There I've said it out loud, and to be honest it's about time someone did. Gone are the days when women were surrounded from a young age with babies of relatives, friends and neighbours. Now with life so much faster, smaller family units, and relatives widely dispersed, we no longer get to see other mothers caring for their young, so we miss the opportunity to pick up tips on everything from breastfeeding to settling.

Nowadays the surprising statistic is that many women don't even hold a baby until they hold their own. Frightening but true!

Yet although we have little or no experience, we are expected to naturally know what to do from the moment our baby enters the world. As you can imagine this expectation places a huge amount of pressure on new mums at a time when they are at their most vulnerable.

Now I know new dads don't always naturally know what to do with a screaming 4 week old either, but instead of feeling like a fish out of water whilst your partner is trying to cope, there are a number of things that you can say and do that will help her feel supported and loved. And at the end of the day if you have a partner that feels happy and at ease, then life is going to be a whole lot easier for both of you.

I hope the following tips help make the transition from a couple to a family as smooth and relaxed as possible.
