Penguins are seabirds, but they

cannot fly. They spend most of

their time in the water and are

excellent swimmers. The shape

of their bodies is perfect for

zooming through the water. Most

penguins have black and white

feathers. Some penguins have

colorful feathers on their heads.

We know of at least 17 different

kinds of penguins. Most live in

southern parts of the world: the

coasts and islands of Australia,

South America, South Africa,

New Zealand, Antarctica, and

the Subantarctic islands.
